I've kept struggling to articulate it but I feel like one of the problems is that conventional wisdom in software design, maybe in industrial design in general, is to hide the workings of the machine from users. So people were primed to accept LLM-generated text by the increasingly polished user interfaces on search engines.
My public school education sucked, but they still managed to spend a week teaching us how to use boolean logic in a search prompt in elementary school.
It bugs me every time someone says they don't want to use Linux because they don't want to have to deal with the command line. It's like saying cars shouldn't have tool kits in the trunk. I feel like we've had to fight to keep access to it.
