"For me, there are two kinds of debts a person can incur. One kind is the material one, which can be seen and touched. It may be as small as a cup of sugar, or as large an amount of money as you can borrow. This has to be paid as soon as possible, so that your own good self-image and personal dignity will not be crushed by it.
The other kind of debt is a spiritual one. It is the one that spurs man to be better than he is, and somehow drives him to go beyond the call of need and duty. One should wear this kind of debt as a suit of shining armor. It can never be fully repaid, but you wish that it could be, with such compounded interest that it would be beyond the wealth of Midas.
I used to envy people who say, 'I don't owe anyone anything!' Now I only feel great pity for those people because they've cut themselves off from the world and human society. How lonely they must be!"
