"It puts an ugly shadow around the mouth." Two causes, both in the cover-up that
hides the artist's drawn mouth before the new one is painted on:
* it faded in with the opening, so it was never fully opaque -- a partial blend
of skin over the dark lip underneath, which is a muddy brown ring. The
dissolve was meant to avoid a pop, but this is a mouth SWAP, which is what
anime has always done frame to frame; there is nothing to dissolve.
* at wide openness the drawn cavity was WIDER than the cover, so the cavity's
