To me, Nolan's work—even when it is visually stunning—typically feels pretty lifeless.
Other than Ledger's Joker, which a) should be credited to Heath Ledger & b) was greatly mythologized due to the circumstances of his death, I can't really think of *characters* from Nolan's films that anyone speaks of with excitement.
