⚡️🇲🇦🇪🇸 NEW - Chaos erupts as thousands of migrants enter Spain's north African territory Ceuta from Morocco

Hundreds of young Moroccans have swum to Ceuta in the hope of migrating, taking advantage of a pull factor created by a decision by the Spanish Supreme Court suspending the immediate return of migrants intercepted at sea or upon arrival by sea. According to this ruling, swimming to Ceuta does not, in and of itself, constitute crossing a physical barrier that would justify an immediate return.

This legal precedent stems from an error committed by Spanish authorities in November 2024, when an Algerian national was returned to Morocco without due process, even though he was not a Moroccan national.

From now on, individuals intercepted under these circumstances must undergo the standard removal procedure, which guarantees them procedural rights, including the assistance of an attorney, access to an interpreter, the opportunity to apply for asylum, and the right to challenge their removal. They can therefore no longer be immediately returned to Morocco.
