1. I agree with 1 in part. More than 9 would make it less susceptible to political and/or philosophical allegiances within the court. I have no idea what the right number is, but recent history had demonstrated 9 is insufficient.
2. Nothing is untouchable by politicians. We’re all politicians to some degree, perhaps not professionally. <smile>
That the Constitution is difficult to amend is a virtue, imho. It has been a sturdy document for 200+ years.
