Bitcoin-BLAKE2b explained for non-technical node runners (technical summary provided in the screenshot)
The main benefits are:
* More ASIC competition: designed to work with hardware from several independent manufacturers, reducing dependence on a single ASIC producer.
* Massively more nonce space: miners get vastly more combinations to search before they need to change anything else in the block.
* Better mining efficiency: the new design should make ASIC controllers simpler and more efficient.
* Protection against block-withholding attacks: adds an optional mechanism to make this type of attack harder.
* Future-proofing: leaves room for things like merge-mining/sidechains and a future 64-bit timestamp.
* Stronger block commitments: fixes an old Bitcoin security issue by making the block header commit to additional information about the block.
So the bigger picture is: BLAKE2b + a redesigned block header intended to make mining more efficient, harder to centralize at the hardware level, and easier to evolve in the future.
