Absolutely right!
One can learn a lot about true masculinity by observing the alpha male within any wild pack, whether it be canine/lupine, feline or primate. The alpha male's physical prowess is for the defense of the pack, and not for defense of his position, or for the imposition of control over the pack. He is cool, observant and completely without ego. He absolutely has the power, but he only uses it within the pack when a subordinate male needs to be brought into line. And even then, he uses just enough force to maintain the hierarchy. Injured or timid members of the pack are counter-productive.

If any dog (particularly visitor's dogs) go for my chickens, I will very swiftly tackle the dog with one hand gripping the the skin around its throat, flip it on its back, knee on the chest to immobilize it, and I will growl at it in my most fierce growly voice. Speed is key. The dog must be in no doubt about who is boss. Dilly-dally and you'll get bitten. Do it properly, and nobody gets hurt except the owner's feelings, but that's fine. The lesson is learned. This is the only circumstance in which I will get physical with a dog, but the dog doesn't get hurt at all.
