America's grid crunch is starting to look like a warning shot for the AI era.
This is what happens when explosive data centre demand collides with decades-old infrastructure, transformer shortages, and a regulatory system still arguing over who pays for the upgrades.
NERC now forecasts more than 224 GW of additional summer peak demand over the next decade, with new data centres accounting for most of the increase. DOE has also warned that much of the grid was built in the 1950s and 1960s, while replacement lead times for large power transformers can stretch from 36 to 60 months.
That does not prove America is one step from a nationwide blackout tomorrow, but it does show the era of cheap, effortless power is over. The bigger question now is whether households end up subsidising the infrastructure buildout for Big Tech.
Who should pay when AI's power-hungry demands outstrip the grid?
