Do you remember the movie Witness with Harrison Ford? He plays a detective who’s wounded while protecting a young Amish boy and his mother from corrupt cops and ends up living with their family. There’s a line in the film that’s always stuck with me: “You be careful out there among the English.” That’s when I first learned the Amish often refer to non-Amish people as “the English.”

I’ve adopted the phrase in my own quirky way. Sometimes, when my wife heads out, I’ll say it to her—half-joking, half-affectionate. We spend a lot of time at home, and at times we feel a little removed from the outside world. So, when she steps out, it’s my way of acknowledging that distance, with a wink.
