I will, of course, have to look at some films from other directors to determine by comparison if this is actually more pronounced in Nolan's work.

I think most fair for me to make a personal aesthetic judgement would be to compare a couple films by my favorite directors, so that I can be sure I'm not criticizing something in Nolan that I would never complain of in the work of my faves.
