You might remember at the first sign of big trouble (Iraq and Saddam), the Saudis (King Fahad) brought the Americans to defend them and their interests because the army/National Guard is very weak on purpose because the family was afraid of possible coups since it was happening all around them, e.g., Egypt (1952), Iraq (1958), Turkey (1960, 1971, 1980), Libya (1969), Yemen (1962), and the possible failed attempt in Arabia, the 1969 Nasser-inspired "Free Officers" plot. The scariest was obviously the Pan-Arabist Ba'athist influence in most of the 20th century.
