#WritersCoffeeClub May 27: Do you read outside the genre you write?
What "genre?" XD
I think knowing what's out there is important, but I'm kind of past reading to do it, much less regularly. I could read a book and spend a couple nights with something I don't enjoy or I could watch a movie and spend 90 min. w/ visuals to pick apart. I could play an indie game that has more to say on a topic than anything you find on store shelves.
Coming at it from a game dev perspective, you don't make good games by playing good games. You make them by fixing something interesting from a bad game or making a game that serves you for a genre you don't like and letting it serve everyone else in that boat.
I think that's applicable to any sort of writing. You might absolutely write a blood-curdling horror thanks to bad romance. You can recognize Batman is a horror monster to his lower-class targets. You can fix a bad movie if you change the details enough. As long as you know what makes it tick, the source is irrelevant.
