Usually, "winning" includes *not* repeatedly punching oneself in the face until one dies, regardless of how hard you punched someone else immediately before punching yourself, over and over again.
Iraq, Afghanistan, and (at the time) Vietnam were essentially colonies full of non-Whites that existed to be exploited and wrecked, either as proxies for wars we'd lose (Cold War) or to deflect rage at home (Iraq, Afghanistan)
