I don’t care which camp does it (BIP-110, production-ready, Core, other RDTS nodes), and I don’t think we have to do it immediately as an existential risk (though sooner is better), but we need to start limiting the amount and type of spam on chain or node running’s eventually going to get centralized, like we are already seeing happen with mining. With enough centralization, Bitcoin becomes a few steps away from being Ripple and that’s pretty much game over. I don’t think BIP-110 solves everything, we need to keep tightening consensus rules over time so it becomes more and more impractical for anything other than financial use cases. We’ve seen from Libre Relay and Core
V30 that node filters are insufficient, so consensus rule changes seems like the only viable path to me. At least the BIP-110 crowd is taking an initial step in the direction of mitigating spam on-chain. Fees and market dynamics will never solve it because the fees for spam go to miners and the costs/legal risks go to unpaid node runners who volunteered to support the ecosystem of peer-to-peer money (not permanent cloud storage).
