Thermals, which can sometimes be seen via dust devils, can rise as long as there's unstable air, which you know is where the lapse rate allows the rising air to remain warmer than air around it. When it reaches the dew point, cumulus clouds form above that. That's another visible sign glider pilots use for thermal lift. Thermal lift and dust devils are the same process.
