Sometimes people are squeamish about getting feeder insects for pet ants. This is one of the reasons harvester ants are popular pets as you can just feed them seeds.
But most other ants will become unhealthy without regular protein.
With some of the aussie ants you can feed them little bits of ham. But that's not going to work with US ants.
