For part of the last heat wave (little more than a week ago) we stayed in a house naturally shaded, from the early morning sun by hills, and all day by trees . Temperatures were 10°C lower in the house than outside.
No air conditioning.
You can do a lot with shade. Here we are lucky enought to have mature deciduous trees on the south side. Shade in summer, sunlight in winter.
