This difference between now and the past is why I find arguments that we're living in the 1930s laughable. I think people who see this as the 1930s are actually engaging in cope; any half-serious look at what life was like then, and what geopolitics was like then, very quickly returns a negative match with today.
By "cope", I mean they're coping with a sense of change and possiblity that they are just *not used to*. Change is hard if you have no practice at it.
Just ask D/CI people.
