In my practice, I prepare my home so that I do not have spirits residing in it, even if they are ancestors. Visits and venerations, yes. Residing....no. Sometimes someone may pass who loves a family member so much they can't move on without them...and not out of spite or vengeance but out of love....they can pull the person to the other side (my pap died and my mam died within the year and they'd been together since they were 12 and 15).
