86 years ago on this day, the Soviets deported my father's entire family, put them on a cattle car, and sent them to a labor camp in Siberia. The youngest perished there, the rest of them made it out. My grandfather and my oldest uncle joined the Polish army, the rest of the family sat out the remainder of the war in a refugee camp in Tengeru, Tanganyika (present-day Tanzania). After the war, they were all allowed to settle in England as refugees, or Displaced Persons in the lingo of the day.
