I think the full context is more ambiguous. I understand the analogy but I don’t think it’s that useful. No one gave bitcoin away. A open permissionless system evolved and the incentives drove the outcome. Why is it called “mainstream media”? Because the majority of individuals follow it. Same with pop culture. Popular implies the majority. The cypher punk ethos was/is a sever minority up against the gravity of the current culture. Bitcoin can still be used in the same manner as when it started. Nothing in the network prevents that. Bitcoin unfortunately expresses what the majority values. If the majority valued sovereignty the world would be a very different place. This isn’t doomerism it’s just the sobering reality. I don’t think bitcoin failed at all. It’s still a great usable tool. I think co opt narrative is still just a mask for people angry the number hasn’t gone up fast enough so they have to place blame somewhere.
