Tithing is taxation via manipulation.
Centralized spirituality congregations convince mentally vulnerable individuals that they will burn for all eternity should they not submit themselves to whatever version of religion they teach.
10% of income is tax. This is not collected the government route of threat of violence and in needed instances, actual violence. Instead, the looming thought of being tortured for all eternity is enough of a motivator to induce enough individuals to voluntarily sacrifice the 10% of income.
