In my former career of medical research I once wrote a piece of software to bolt a web front-end onto a very geeky RNA/DNA analysis algorithm.

It was used by a few dozen people every month, and each time it saved them roughly two weeks worth of desktop work. It ran in the corner of a room for roughly 12 years before being powered down and superseded by something better.

To this day this was probably my single biggest contribution to science, society and the health of humans who we share the planet with. I struggle to feel "useful" these days. It's one of the reasons I hang onto photography mentoring. I feel useful when teaching. More than I do when shooting. In a perfect world I wouldn't actually be a photographer, I'd just help everyone else to be a photographer instead.

Which is pretty much where I ended up in my research career. Helping others who knew what they were doing :)
