An active investor seeks to do better than the index. In order to do so, he must be cleverer (or luckier) than the market overall, possibly investing in assets that are not easily traded, or identifying assets that are misvalued by the market, and holding them until they are better valued.
Studies show that individuals are better off as passive investors. You and I are unlikely to be cleverer than people whose job it is to make money through investing.
