Linux Mint is at a genuinely interesting turning point.
For years, Mint has been one of the safest recommendations for people moving from Windows to Linux. It is familiar, stable, simple, and friendly.
Now the project is preparing for a more ambitious development path.
According to the Mint team's March 2026 update, Linux Mint will move to a longer development lifecycle, with the next release planned for Christmas 2026. The release is temporarily being called Mint 23 "Alfa, although the team says the final name and versioning are not locked yet.
The big technical change is the installer.
Mint is moving away from Ubiquity and adopting the LMDE live-installer across the main edition. That matters because it brings Mint and LMDE closer together, reduces duplication, and gives the project a more unified foundation.
Current work includes:
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS as the package base
Linux Kernel 7.0
Cinnamon 6.7 unstable
CJS 140
A new Wayland-based screensaver
LMDE's live-installer replacing Ubiquity
This feels like Mint trying to keep its beginner-friendly soul while accepting that the Linux desktop is changing quickly.
That is healthy.
Stable does not have to mean frozen. Familiar does not have to mean stuck.
