Is removing the right of (some) defendants to elect a jury trial the only way of speeding up the justice system or another attack on democratic rights?

Much depends on how much weight you put on the aphorism: 'justice delayed is justice denied', and how far you think that juries ameliorate the (potential) prejudices of judges operating without recourse to the defendant's 'peers'.

Of course, you might feel that the real issue is the justice budget!
