Jewelry is such a weird juxtaposition industry. On one hand, it's a luxury good that we don't need. But at the same time, it's an industry that's been around for centuries. Humans really like wearing shiny things.
Most people do not know what quality jewelry is and I think that's kind of a symptom of our times that you can see in pretty much every industry, declining quality, everywhere. Lots of shitty marketing tactics And whoever has the biggest marketing budget gets their message across. So you have large companies like See's and Kay's pushing out crap quality with "good" marketing. While actual craftsmen have to actually scrape for every client they have and do a whole song and dance on why their product is actually better.
There was always a wild to me having to watch people complain about why my dad's diamond-studded earrings were more expensive than the next large competitor. And he would always have to explain to them that if they go to some big retail competitor, they're more than likely not getting a real diamond or 24 karat gold. Or when people come in with a rash around their finger and my dad having to explain metallurgy to them and how inferior alloys would cause these reactions on sensitive skin.
Diamonds are their own special relm of bullshit to. De beers started the whole fucking industry in the 30s / 40s and most people cant tell a real diamond from CZ or mossanite making it brutal for people selling real diamonds at an honest margin.
