They look at the number.
The portfolio balance.
The home value.
The retirement account.
It looks real.
It feels real.
But paper wealth and real wealth are not the same thing.
Real wealth is liquid.
Real wealth is accessible.
Real wealth does not disappear the moment you need it most.
Paper wealth is different.
It is the home equity you cannot touch without selling or borrowing.
It is the stock portfolio you cannot sell without triggering a tax event.
It is the retirement account you cannot access for twenty more years.
It is the business valuation that only exists if someone agrees to buy it.
Here is where it gets dangerous:
People spend against paper wealth.
They feel rich, so they act rich.
They upgrade the lifestyle.
They loosen the savings rate.
They stop building real buffers.
And then something happens.
A job loss. A health event. A market correction.
And suddenly the number on the screen means nothing.
The question is not: what is my net worth?
The question is: how much of that can I actually use, right now, without destroying the rest?
That number is usually much smaller.
One line to remember:
Wealth on paper protects nothing. Wealth you can reach does.
