The big wing is there because an art guy said “Yeah, that’s cool and kinda weird!”
Kinda like why all the fighters have wings… and are named after the fact they have wings… which would probably be a liability in actual starship design.
My favorite thing about Star Wars is that when they created the universe they just decided to do what seemed cool whether it made any sense or not.
Lightsabers are the prime example.
