You'll see commentators squealing that the UK's pubic debt is at a historic high as it approached 100% of GDP (although its not quite there yet); yes, its a historical high if history started in the 1970s.

Between 1915 and 1960 actually public debt was above that level peaking at just under 250% in the early 1950s.

Now of course two world wars played a role here, but so did the inter-war depression & the transition to modernity in the 1950s... so lets just add a little perspective!
