I also find it very interesting how the responses to things like this pan out in current year compared to what it would have been even 5 years ago. There is this quite noticeable political shift online, and it seems like many of the moves recently are the former "internet good guys" (political leftists) making an attempt to secure the last bits of remaining power they have, especially since the general consensus on many things has been drifting right over the past few years since these people have been very exclusive and openly hostile to people they disagree with
