Finland’s economy is crumbling, Finland has the highest unemployment rate in the European Union, ahead of Spain at 10.1%.

Unemployment stands at 10.3% in June 2026, reaching a peak of 10.6% in November 2025 and averaging 9.7% for the full year 2025. Unemployment among those with low educational degrees is at 18.8% in 2025. Youth unemployment is also a major issue, reaching 21.4% in August 2025.

The country’s debt-to-GDP ratio has risen sharply, reaching 89.7% in Q1 2026, compared to 88.5% in 2025. This is forecasted to increase further to 91.2% in 2026 and 93.1% in 2027. The year-to-Q1 2026 change in the debt-to-GDP ratio is a significant 5.5 percentage points.

The national deficit is projected to be 3.4% of GDP in 2025, increasing to 4.5% in 2026 and 4.6% in 2027. Meanwhile, GDP growth is expected to be modest, averaging 0.2% in 2025, with forecasts of 0.8% in 2026 and 1.4% in 2027.

Finland’s GDP per capita, measured in purchasing power parity (PPS), remains 101% of the EU average, a figure that was 117% in 2010. However, when compared to other European countries, Finland’s debt-to-GDP ratio in Q1 2026 is higher than Spain’s at 101.6% and Portugal’s at 91.0%.
