Whispers from Above

One morning a couple of years ago, Charlie and I were sitting outside under an overcast sky. Through the trees at the edge of the forest, I noticed a bird approaching from the northeast. At first I assumed it was a vulture—they’re always gliding around out there—but when it broke above the treetops, I realized it was a Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias).
