It would have been absolutely transformative for me if I had been taught about the existence and validity of trans folks in school. Instead, I learned about it through transphobic jokes in media and overhearing weird cagey references to sex change operations. A dirty thing for dirty people.
There is a germ of truth in the “teaching kids about gender will make them trans” — if I had known in school that this option existed, I could’ve and would’ve advocated for it. It would have been hard, but great. Instead I got to feel broken and dirty for decades.
