"content": "For the first time in U.S. history, the national debt has surpassed $40 trillion.\n\nThe milestone comes as the federal government has added roughly $2.5 trillion to the debt since the start of fiscal year 2026 on October 1, 2025. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the government borrowed approximately $1.8 trillion during the first 10 months of the fiscal year alone.\n\nBased on the Census Bureau’s 2026 population estimate of about 342.7 million, $40 trillion amounts to roughly $116,700 in federal debt per U.S. resident.\n\nMeanwhile, the cost of servicing the debt continues to rise. The CBO reported approximately $963 billion in net interest payments during the first 10 months of FY2026—equivalent to more than $3 billion in interest costs every day.\n\nhttps://blossom.primal.net/66db60a3281eec141c069df451d8f56e4d2a2aa5a56e8610cba7d95bf74cce71.jpg ",
