IMO if atheists were shown the symbolic meaning in the Bible, they would very quickly "convert" (although "conversion" is a nonsense concept if you think about it). Its the loss of the deeper meaning, the truth that ordinary language is inadequate to convey and so can only be transmitted in a roundabout way via symbolism, that has impoverished religion to such a point as to drive away the most critically minded. And even just the moderately critically minded...
Unfortunately, even were they to decipher the symbols - which is not entirely an intellectual endeavor, requiring creative, intuitive, and abstract thinking, as well as an obscene amount of GFY mentality - they would be no less enemies of the church. There is no way it could result in a happy earthly mirror of the united church above. The earthly church is intolerant of symbolic meaning, and various crusades and inquisitions prove their seriousness. But I think atheists prefer truth over illusion, and if they discover the Truth behind the truth, then the church they built would easily make the false church of material empires obsolete, and quickly replace it. And that's the only way : build new.
When the Way is lost, only ritual remains, to paraphrase and simplify a chapter from the Dao de Jing. Christianity was called "the Way," before the empire took it over. So what happens when the Way is rediscovered?
