For those of us affected, that detail is the whole horror of it. The device was offline. The seed words had been written down - some stamped into steel - and left untouched. Yet by early August, Galaxy Research was describing more than 1,500 BTC compromised across several attack waves. The very thing purpose built to protect the secret remained cold and silent while the money left...
At the centre of the catastrophe was a failure of randomness. In affected firmware, the path that should have reached the hardware random-number generator could instead resolve to a deterministic software fallback. The wallet still produced valid words, addresses and signatures. Nothing looked broken. Updating the device could not repair a seed already generated through the faulty path; the wallet had to be replaced and the funds moved.
The system did not fail by stopping. It failed by continuing.
Michael Crichton had a word for this in Jurassic Park: thintelligence. Ian Malcolm uses it to describe technical intelligence that sees the immediate situation but not the surround; intelligence that can solve the local problem while missing the living system around it. The technicians are not fools. The frame is simply too small.
Coldcard offers an almost painfully exact example. The firmware compiled. The device created seeds. Hardware randomness code existed. The product had been reviewed. Each statement was true. None answered the question that mattered most: what did the finished device actually call, in production, when it created the user’s secret?
Coinkite’s own account now says a series of bugs prevented the intended hardware RNG from contributing randomness in affected firmware. Block traced the problem to a build and linking error that allowed the software fallback to be used instead. The part existed. The process reached something else.
This is how 'thintelligence' becomes dangerous. It doesn't look like ignorance. It looks like competence arranged inside the wrong boundary.
There is a parallel here with the notion of Maya (Māyā), though not in the lazy sense that the world is fake. The air gap was real. The secure elements were real. The public code was real. So were the menus and recovery words. The mistake was allowing those visible signs to stand for a deeper property they could not prove.
The signs of security were real. What they appeared to guarantee was not.
Maybe The Matrix offers the modern image: a coherent interface concealing the machinery beneath it. Coldcard users moved through their security theatre of warnings, backups and signatures. Underneath, a quiet technical substitution had changed the conditions of reality.
It wasn't until the thefts began that certainty broke apart.
Loss estimates changed. New models and firmware versions entered the discussion. Trackers disagreed. Some movements were confirmed attacks; others were possible copycats or defensive migrations. Old posts resurfaced. Speculation hardened into accusation, then softened again when new details emerged.
Some of this was inevitable. A live investigation is untidy. But the experience began to resemble what Alexei Yurchak called hypernormalisation , and what Adam Curtis later turned into a broader political metaphor: a stable picture maintained until reality breaks through, followed by a shape-shifting theatre in which people no longer know what's true, what is performance, or where the real machinery sits.
The analogy has limits. There is no evidence that the Coldcard information crisis was deliberately orchestrated in the manner Curtis describes. Much of the disorder seems to have come from (honest) uncertainty, podcast and social-media speed and, now, an investigation unfolding in real time and in public. But the psychological result is similar: first, too much certainty; then, too many realities.
Yuri Bezmenov’s idea of demoralisation is useful. Bezmenov was speaking in a Cold War context about Soviet ideological subversion, and his broader claims belong to that history. Yet one part works quite well...

For Bitcoiners, the danger sounds like this: I learned the rules. I kept the seed offline. I bought the serious device. And now the anons, plebs, and "experts" disagreed. The facts keep changing... so, judgement itself is pointless.
That is more than grief. It is the collapse of the connection between responsible action and consequence. Once that connection goes, denial and conspiracy begin to look like opposites, but they often answer the same wound. One says nothing fundamental happened. The other says everything was planned. Both offer the relief of superficial certainty.
And yet this last week also produced another movement.
Alex Thorn and Galaxy Research turned victim reports and on-chain patterns into provisional maps, separating stronger clusters from weaker ones and warning users while the picture was still forming. Calle , Rob Hamilton and others formed the Bitcoin Red Team, using AI-assisted scanning and human review across hundreds of open-source projects. Its first report listed 4,962 potential findings across 390 projects, while noting that only a portion had been reproduced. James O’Beirne ’s CKTripwire took another path: recreate the faulty generator, fund decoy wallets on mainnet, and observe what attackers could sweep.
None of this returned the lost bitcoin. Nor did it prove the wider ecosystem safe.
But it made reality more legible.
During a dark week, the old cyber-hornet meme has become more than a meme. People scattered across the world began working the problem: tracing, reproducing, warning and testing. Thintelligence was answered by widening the frame. Shape-shifting confusion was answered by inspectable evidence. Demoralisation was answered not by optimism, but by action.
In the Gospel of Matthew, during the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus warns against storing up “treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal” (Matthew 6:19–20). The bitcoin mattered. It represented labour, restraint, family and future, and its loss deserves grief. But an empty wallet is not a grave. No loved one has died. You are still here, and so are the people for whom the money was being saved.
That does not make the loss small. Not at all. Rather, it places it within the larger order of what can and cannot be restored. Money can be rebuilt. Life continues.

What passes is not meaningless, but neither is it ultimate. The obligation now is to endure, to understand what happened, and, in time, to begin again.
