#WritersCoffeeClub Apr. 6: Talk about something you've written which you expected would (*or expect will*) divide readers.
I hate to say it, but as gently as it does get touched upon, Ethan is kind of faced with the fact that he has the moral high ground in matters of:<li>racism</li><li>human trafficking</li><li>slavery</li><li>piracy (rape, murder, and pillaging)</li>
And really does *not* have the moral high ground in terms of:<li>homophobia (not that he's hateful; just deeply insecure in a more enlightened time when the Overton Window has shifted to make him the outlier)</li><li>political expediency</li>
And he's not always able to engage with these things on his own terms or with as much distance as he'd like.
He deals with questions of what counts as a "human" and what counts as a "person" and where those questions are different in a universe with robots and aliens.
It's patently unlike the bulk of the work I've publicly announced. And I worry greatly about that.
