I mostly skipped usenet. I encountered irc and forums first. Both work well imo. It's not that I dislike the newer solutions, but they want to be everything and centralized and with ever-changing nonsense. And that shit gets tiring. I think forums with their targeted selection of topics are actually nice, because you go there and it will be interesting because of it.
The social media oriented solutions are general first.
