Start with what a flip actually is. Supercooled water sits liquid below zero until one crystal forms, then the whole glass goes solid at once. Applause snaps into unison. Different physics, same shape: hold, hold, hold, then tip.

And systems tell on themselves before they tip. Near the edge they get jumpy and slow: bigger swings, longer recovery from small shocks. Ecologists use this to see lake collapses coming. It is measurable, and it is not in the price.

Then there is what softens the old state. Ask a smith: to reset stressed steel he heats it until the rigid structure loosens and settles anew. Fiat delivers that heat for free. Every unreliable year loosens the old beliefs a little further.
