The U.S. Senate has passed a bill that includes a four-year prohibition on the Federal Reserve issuing a central bank digital currency (CBDC). The measure, which was attached to a housing affordability bill, passed with a 85-5 vote. Under the proposed legislation, the Federal Reserve and its regional Reserve Banks would be barred from directly or indirectly issuing or creating a CBDC or any substantially similar digital asset. This prohibition would remain in effect until the end of 2030. While the Federal Reserve has not been actively pursuing a digital dollar project, Republican lawmakers have consistently voiced concerns that a CBDC could serve as a tool for government financial surveillance. If the bill is approved by the House of Representatives and signed into law by the President, the CBDC ban will become legally binding. This development follows a previous executive order by the Trump administration in January 2025, which aimed to halt the government's promotion of a CBDC.
