I've noticed a lot of modern movies' audio are designed for a 5.1 set up, center speaker being voice. If there is 5.1 home theater being used, the voices get washed out by the thundering explosions & music. If there is a "dramatic" moment in dialog, it's like the audio engineer intentionally lowered the voice channel.
Watch movies from the 90's and earlier that have not been "modernized", no issues there!
