Nobody seems to have picked up on the point that the phrase "patriot game," singular, originally referred to the activities of the Irish Republican Army. It's from a song, "The Patriot Game," by Dominic Behan, the younger brother of the playwright Brendan Behan, which describes those activities with immense approval. The song has been covered by a million people, including Judy Collins, although she left out the verse about killing cops. Here's Luke Kelly, who was less delicate:
