On Feb, 6th 1970 a man (Jack Hyde), shot at a telescope, what was the 3rd largest in the world at the time, with a 9mm hand gun. He held the telescope staff at gunpoint and forced them to lower the massive telescope so that he could crawl into it. Then he opened fired into the primary optical surface, a 8 foot diameter mirror. After shooting it 7 times and disappointed it didn't shatter, he then took a hammer and began beating on the mirror before finally being subdued.

Initially there were disputes over the damage. The sheriff who arrested Jack reported that the telescope was totally destroyed, though it turned out the damage was minor as the telescope resumed operations the next night. In fact, the original damaged mirror is still used today, with the hammer and bullet holes still present.

I want to find more information on what happened to Hyde. It seems like he had a mental breakdown, as he was hospitalized after the incident. But he was also charged with "malicious destruction", but I can't find any records on what happened to him afterwards.
