Proposed budget changes - I’m not normally a reader of the Barefoot Investor, but I really liked Scott’s take on Labor’s proposed CGT changes (
https://www.barefootinvestor.com/articles/youll-hate-this). It’s written in plain English and it’s a much more nuanced view than the memes on social media. You know how many Australian taxpayers reported a capital gain last year? 7% (
https://grattan.edu.au/news/grattan-institutes-2026-budget-cheat-sheet/). There’s a lot of noise for only 7% of people, and it’s honestly disappointing to see people who I know are some of the highest earners in the country complaining about these changes. Yeah, when I eventually sell my Canva shares, I’m gonna pay more tax on them. I’m okay with that. As Scott points out, we enjoy “a standard of living in the top handful of countries on the planet. The cops don’t shake us down (mostly). Our kids go to decent public schools (mostly). And if one of them gets sick, you don’t need a GoFundMe page.” Even without jobs, Rodd’s and my assets still generate more income than a lot of people working in this country. We are ridiculously lucky. (We didn’t even get to take advantage of the family trust rort, given my status as a dual US citizen.) And I really don’t buy the argument that paying slightly higher CGT will stop anyone from starting a business. You know what stops people from starting businesses in the US? Not having healthcare.
