If your ancestors migrated from Europe or Asia to North America 100+ years ago, odds are that they traveled packed into steerage, with little privacy, poor sanitation, and rampant disease. At least by the early 20th century, (very basic) food and bedding was provided: before that, you had to bring your own, or tough luck.
Be as kind to today's migrants as you hope some people were to your ancestors. Nobody puts themself through this nightmare because they *want* to leave their homes, families, and friends.
