Eich did not willingly invent Javascript. He wanted to slim down CMU's Common Lisp interpreter and put it in the browser. Some manager whose ancestors played the name game rejected this idea, saying he had to create a brand new language from scratch and it had to have Java in the name, because Java was hot and marketable then. He then gave Eich one week to create a language with Java in the name which would soon be the most deployed on earth.
