Reading Dan Sinker’s excellent blog post this morning about how we live in the “who cares” era. It is, one the one hand, a refutation of AI slop, and on the other a much more interesting discussion looking to answer the question: “How did we end up in a world where anyone wants AI slop in the first place!”. Unsurprisingly, the answer he comes to is that nobody fucking cares.

And this idea that nobody cares, it crystallized a thing that I had increasingly struggled with at work on computers. The idea of an “mvp” to test ideas had mutated into a world where quality didn’t matter, just get the next test of a feature out and see if it sticks, shit can it tomorrow if people aren’t using it, next!

And maybe it starts to answer a little bit about why print making has appealed so much to me. This is an endeavor where the only thing that matters is caring. There is no version of an AI slop hand made print that matters. The only part of this process that matters is that I made it, and I cared. 🤔

I think a LOT about returning to work. It would make a lot of sense! The world is kind of scary right now and having some income would buy us some financial stability. I like working with people and my current world can be a little lonely. But the idea of going back to work on human slop just fills me with dread.

I think I’d be really excited about working with a small team on something that mattered, with the time to pour our caring into it. But I’m not sure that job exists in our society, and I’m not sure I know how to make it.
