I very much hear you on that (also rule-follower, to a fault I suppose). I guess it depends on the rule you want to break. Maybe “convention” is a better word. Breaking a “rule” of composition can yield interesting and pleasing results (benign example). Yelling at a cop who is standing out in the rain at night directing traffic (witnessed this from the passenger seat, makes one suck in the breath) is the kind of convention-breaking that, um, brings unnecessary drama. Finding ways to skip the traditional career path and buy yourself some freedom might be one that’s worth the risk. Time and place for everything.
